Langtang Gosainkunda trek is one of the nearest trekking destinations from Kathmandu. It has unparalleled combination of natural beauty and cultural riches. The trek provides an opportunity to explore the remote and spectacular valley of Langtang, with the high mountain lakes at Gosainkunda. The people in this region are mostly of Tamang and Tibetan origin, whose culture dates back to hundreds of years. Traditionally built stone houses, beautifully carved wooden porches, their craftsmanship and attire reflect their rich Himalayan heritage.
During Janai Purnima (full-moon festival in August), hundreds of Hindu and Buddhists pilgrims visit the area in about a one-week period. At this point in time Jhankris (Shaman priests) come from all over Nepal to dance in an induced trance to all night singing and drum beating. It takes about 45 minutes to circumambulate the lake.
The trail to Gosainkunda involves rapid ascent to about high elevation of 4,380m. and therefore, it is best done after acclimatizing in Langtang, Helambu or Nagthali. Gosainkunda Lake has a black rock in the middle, said to be the head of Shiva. Legend reads that Shiva created this high altitude lake when he pierced a glacier with his trident to obtain water to quench his thirst after consuming poison. There is a white rock under the water that is said to be the remnant of an ancient shrine of Shiva. It appears underground via a subterranean channel and surface in Khumbeshwar pool, next to the five storey Shiva Temple in Patan, more than 60km. away.
