On May 29, 1953, Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa of Nepal, became the first climbers to successfully reach the summit of Mount Everest. They started their ascent from a camp located near the Khumbu Icefall, which is now known as the Everest Base Camp. After the successful ascent of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, Everest Base Camp became an important starting point for the climbers. Over time, the facilities and infrastructure at the base camp improved to accommodate climbers, support staff, and researchers. This led to a greater number of climbers and trekkers with the help of assistance of the sherpas and professional guides. Everest Base Camp remains a popular destination for climbers, trekkers, and adventure lovers who wish to experience the breathtaking beauty of the Himalayas and witness the iconic Mount Everest. Today, Everest Base Camp Trek is on top of every trekker’s list of ‘must do’ trekking routes.

    Useful Information

Everest Base Camp Trek Elevation/ Altitude

Before embarking on the journey to the Everest Region, most travelers have a big question: "How high is Everest Base Camp?” You get different answers to that question as the glacier does not stay in one place and changes. The elevation of the Everest Trek journey begins from 2,860 meters in Lukla to the highest point at 5,643 meters. Kala Patthar is the highest point of the Everest Trek, from where the sight of the highest peak is astounding. All in all, the high altitude journey of Everest starts at 2,860 meters and ends at 5,643 meters at the highest altitude.

Accommodation and Food at Everest Base Camp Trek

EBC Trek is not a luxury tour, and you should not expect a full luxurious lodge or hotel for acclimatization. You get accommodation in a hotel (3 stars or greater) that can be on a twin-share basis. The facilities you get there are a hot shower, charging points, wifi, and good beds. Even though the rooms might not be luxurious, breathtaking views of the mountains from the hotel windows make the whole living experience worthwhile.

The food you get on the trek around Everest depends on the teahouse lodges you go to. Dal-Bhaat is the most popular food item on the menu for dinner. You get rotis, oat porridge, cookies, and mashed potatoes for breakfast. Not only this, but there are also other varieties of fresh Himalayan food you must try during your time there. Imagine having a hot steaming dal-bhaat after a full day of the hike. Trust me. Nothing beats the thrill of making your stomach full after a long workday.

Permits required for Everest Base Camp Trek

The government of Nepal has imposed two kinds of permits for you to enter into the EBC. It is for the sole purpose to fund for the preservation of the beauty that surrounds Everest and other mountain peaks. As you need to enter Sagarmatha National Park to carry on the EBC journey, you must pay a certain sum of the National Park Entry Fee, just like the others.

Khumbu Region has been made popular on the map by some of the great mountaineers before, like Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary. The municipality charges a small sum of money, the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit costing around NRs.2000 per person, to maintain the beauty and authenticity of the region.

The two Everest Base Camp Trek Entry Permits you must have are Sagarmatha National Park Entrance Permit (NRs. 3000 per person) Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entrance Permit (NRs. 2000 per person).

Also, if you have many members in a trekking group, then the cost for one person comes down by a big margin.

However, the best options for pure drinking water during the Everest Base Camp Trekking are SteriPEN and Purification Tablets. SteriPEN uses UV technology to kill 99.9% of bacteria, easily turning normal tap water into drinking water. In addition to this, purification tablets are cheap to buy and easy to carry. You can add them to the water, and they purify the water. However, the tablets take hours to work and are comparatively less effective.

Everest Base Camp Trek is on the bucket list for most travelers around the globe. It is very much important for you as a potential trekker to know about the things you need to take proper care of to do or not to even think of trying. Following are the things you should avoid at any cost to complete your trek without any complications.

    Walking too fast

Walking fast is a great skill to have. But, you have to make sure you don’t walk way too fast as you might get caught with altitude sickness and acute mountain sickness. It can be very hard for you to continue the trekking journey.

    Drinking too little

When you walk for too long you sweat a lot. As a result of which, your body needs sufficient liquid to stay hydrated and continue the journey well. So, you should drink enough so that you won’t suffer from any sort of dehydration problem.

    Getting no sleep

Sleep is the most important way of getting proper rest. Getting no sleep and partying until late at night make you fully exhausted and you won’t be able to continue the journey with the same energy and intensity.

    Trespassing the park entry point

Whenever you go on any trek, make sure you enter there legally. There are many points around the area from where you can trespass into the trek but avoid doing that. The legal authorities can actually put you into jail for that particular deed.

    Throwing garbage carelessly

One of the most burning problems in the Everest Region is the bad management of garbage and wastage. Some travelers throw waste everywhere without any proper way. It leads to the park becoming extremely dirty and you may feel difficulty in performing normal things during your time there.

Wearing new and uncomfortable shoes on the trek

Whenever you wear new shoes it is highly likely that the shoes start pinching your feet making it extremely difficult for you to walk the hard trails. So, always make sure you don’t wear new and uncomfortable shoes because they will hurt you a lot in the long run of the journey.

Tipping in the Everest  Base Camp Trek

You can meet so many people during your Everest Base Camp Trek  journey. During your visit to the teahouse lodges or the porters or guides who you will travel with for the whole journey. The best of all is that you can actually tip them for extra money if you love their company and service.
