Where is the Poon Hill Trek located?

Poon Hill Trek is located in the Annapurna Conservation Area of Nepal, within the Annapurna region. It starts and ends near Nayapul and passes through picturesque villages and forests, culminating at Poon Hill for breathtaking views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges.

Poon Hill Trek Elevation and altitude

The highest point of the Poon Hill Trek is Poon Hill itself, which has an elevation of approximately 3,210 meters (10,531 feet) above sea level.

Poon Hill Trek in Autumn (Sep-Nov)

Autumn (September to November) is one of the most popular and favorable times to undertake the Poon Hill Trek in Nepal. Autumn is known for its clear skies, providing trekkers with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, including Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, from Poon Hill. The crisp air and clear visibility make this a prime season for photography and enjoying the panoramic landscapes. The weather during autumn is mild and enjoyable for trekking. Daytime temperatures during autumn are pleasant and comfortable for trekking, ranging from around 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F) in lower elevations. Higher altitudes and early mornings/evenings might be cooler, so be prepared for slightly colder temperatures. The autumn season coincides with various Nepalese festivals, such as Dashain and Tihar. This adds a cultural dimension to your trek as you might have the chance to observe local festivities and interactions with the villagers. Overall, trekking Poon Hill in autumn provides an excellent combination of stunning mountain views, comfortable weather, and vibrant landscapes, making it a highly recommended time to experience this popular trekking route.

Poon Hill Trek in Winter (Dec-Feb)

Trekking to Poon Hill during the winter months can be a different experience compared to other seasons. Daytime temperatures in lower elevations might range from around 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F), while at higher elevations and during early mornings and evenings, temperatures can drop significantly, often going below freezing point. At places like Ghorepani and Poon Hill, nighttime temperatures can be quite cold. Winter is generally drier than other seasons, but there's still a possibility of encountering snowfall, especially at higher altitudes. This can make the trails slippery and challenging, so be prepared for potentially icy and snowy sections. While the winter months might offer clearer skies compared to the monsoon season, there can still be mist and haze that limit visibility. However, when the skies clear, the snow-covered landscapes can provide a unique and beautiful setting for trekking. Winter conditions can make the trails more challenging, especially if there's snow or ice. Trekking poles and good quality trekking boots with proper traction are essential. If you're considering trekking to Poon Hill in the winter, it's important to be well-prepared and to carefully consider your experience level, equipment, and comfort with potentially colder and more challenging conditions.

Poon Hill Trek in Spring (Mar-May)

Poon Hill during the spring months (March to May) is another fantastic option. Spring is considered one of the best times to undertake the Poon Hill Trek due to its mild temperatures, blooming flora, and clear skies. Daytime temperatures during spring are pleasant and can range from around 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F) in lower elevations. As you ascend to higher elevations, temperatures might be slightly cooler but still comfortable for trekking. It is the time when the rhododendron forests along the trail come to life, showcasing a vibrant display of colors, especially in April. The landscapes are lush and green, making for stunning trekking views. Spring usually brings better trail conditions compared to winter, with fewer icy and snowy sections. Likewise, spring season offers some of the clearest skies of the year, allowing for spectacular views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges from Poon Hill and other viewpoints along the route.

Poon Hill Trek in Monsoon (Jun-Aug)

Trekking to Poon Hill during the monsoon season means you'll be facing rainy conditions and varying temperatures. While the temperatures might not be extremely cold, the wet and humid environment can still bring challenges. Daytime temperatures range from around 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Nighttime temperatures can be cooler, ranging from around 10°C to 15°C (50°F to 59°F) in the lower elevations. As you ascend to higher altitudes, temperatures can drop further, possibly reaching single digits or even closer to freezing at places like Ghorepani and Poon Hill. Monsoon season in Nepal is characterized by heavy rainfall, which can lead to muddy and slippery trails. Rainfall can be persistent and intense, affecting visibility and making trekking more challenging. The risk of landslides and rock falls increases during the monsoon due to the saturated ground. Cloud cover and mist are common during the monsoon, which can obstruct mountain views, including those from Poon Hill. Clear mountain vistas might be limited, but you might have moments of clearer skies
